The tech community and me

As I progress in my journey in learning various Web technologies, I have attended various meetups, events and workshops in the Toronto Web community. In particular, the following communities have shaped my passion as a Web professional:

Ladies Learning Code—a nonprofit organization founded by Heather Payne in 2011 in Toronto to open opportunities in teaching women and girls how to code, it has expanded across Canada. I took the introductory workshops in HTML/CSS, Mobile Web and JavaScript in mid-2013, which led me to further learning in web technologies in...
HackerYou—a spinoff of Ladies Learning Code, it is the host of the first-ever coding bootcamp in Canada and offers a wide range of part-time courses in Web technologies and design. I took courses in HTML/CSS/Responsive Web Design, Ruby on Rails and JavaScript, to gain the foundations of full-stack Web development.

Giving back

Women and girls have traditionally been underrepresented in the tech community. To increase interest in technologies for this underrepesented demographic, Ladies Learning Code offers workshops that teach women, girls and kids beginner-friendly workshops in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Responsive Design, WordPress and Photoshop, among other technologies.

Since 2014, I have had the opportunity to be a mentor at the following Ladies Learning Code workshops:

  • HTML & CSS for Beginners
  • CSS for Beginners
  • Responsive Design for Beginners
  • jQuery for Beginners
  • JavaScript for Beginners

Being able to guide enthusiastic learners to build their very own Web sites, as well as add style, pizzazz and a touch of mobile compatibility to their hard work, brings me a tremendous sense of satisfaction and inspires me to learn even more.

Thank you to Ladies Learning Code for giving me the opportunity to pursue a course of lifelong learning, and the opportunity to give back to the tech community!
